Pippa – Researcher, 29 yrs, New Zealander

“Why choose the long way back to France?”

Because during our 4 years in Australia, we’ve developed a great passion for ‘bush’ camping, 4wd adventure and discovering scenes in nature where it seems like we are the only ones to have ever set foot…

Our first trip to Central America taught me that we can live very simply, without the extra baggage of our daily routine and that this allows us to assess what we really want from our lives, and to find what is truly important. This is also what I hope to find during this trip.

If we are moving to France, it’s also because we wish to set ourselves up and stay there a while, to start a family and to become home owners for the first time. But we need another chance to a big adventure before that responsibility !

But finally, and especially, it’s because Florent had a crazy idea, and I must be just crazy enough to want to accompany him !

Florent – IT consultant, 33 yrs, French

“I dedicate this Africa Trip 2007 to my friends… you know who you are ;-)… as well as to my family and particularly to my parents and 3 sisters… I don’t have any other reason to leave this wonderful country to come back to France, 10 years on, other than to ‘reconnect’ with you.

Lastly, to Pippa, my wife. I owe you this project… this idea sprouted just after meeting you over 5 years ago and from the very beginning you said yes. It was a first ‘yes’ that preceded many others ;-) …From then on, you’ve supported me in every way and this adventure has also become your adventure, ours, as you have shared in all the preparation and we look forward to beginning this memorable adventure together.”

Big Mama – Toyota Landcruiser Troopcarrier, Diesel, 1996 model, 230 000kms and counting!

Big Mama is the last in a series of 3 4x4s. With our first, a Landcruiser Sahara 1984 we acquired our first notions of 4x4 driving and we developed our passion for adventure and the Australian bush. After 22 years of service though, it’s true that she was a little long in the tooth for an African crossing! Big Mama 2, a Troopcarrier 1997, all equipped for camping, followed… It’s LPG/Petrol system meant we could travel extremely cheaply in Australia but we quickly found out that the complexity of the electrical system and the difficulty in finding LPG in Africa would be a severe handicap for travel! Very satisfied with the type of vehicle, we decided to take the same model, but in diesel. Enter Big Mama 3 in October 2006.
